She’s the nation’s new – unlikely – sweetheart and he’s being dubbed the “Brummie Simon Cowell”, and now Benefits Street star Dee Kelly has called in Barry Tomes of Tomes PR UK/USA to manage her thriving career.
Despite ‘Benefits Street’ ending last week, the show’s biggest star, Dee Kelly, has been hitting headlines all week with the UK’s top journalists speculating as to what’s next for her. With television shows, underwear modelling and even a rap career being offered, Dee is now looking ahead to her new life in the public eye and has called in media and entertainment expert Barry Tomes to help carve out a career that will see James Turner Street as ‘just the start’ for her and her family.
After appearing on the Channel 4 show, Dee was quickly catapulted into the public eye as the matriarch of the street, handling everyone’s problems and keeping community spirit alive. Her dry sense of humour and no-nonsense attitude has divided opinions but after taking part in ‘Benefits Britain: The Big Debate’ on Channel 4, the mum-of-two showed that she could hold her own in front of any audience. Her run-ins with MPs and the media have even seen her threaten to run for Parliament herself.
With offers flooding in from around the UK, Dee has now appointed Tomes PR to handle her publicity, with MD Barry Tomes acting as her Manager. Barry said:
“Dee is TV gold! In less than a week she has been in the Daily Mail, The Sun, Daily Star, Metro and Huffington Post, that’s on top of the constant coverage in Birmingham press. People have really taken to her and despite the controversial nature of benefits, she has become somewhat of a ‘hero’ for the working class. Of course there are conflicting views but Dee stands up for what she believes in and is quick to turn the debate around.
“Tomes PR is delighted to be working with her and we’re now just looking at all of the opportunities to weigh up what’s right for her. This isn’t just about ’15 minutes of fame’, it’s about helping to change the life of Dee and her family and giving them a fresh start. She loves James Turner Street and the people that live there but she now has the chance to get back into work and set up a future for her two lovely children, Caitlin and Gerrard.”
Barry Tomes heads up Tomes PR, which is part of the Barry Tomes Media Group. Celebrating his 40th year in the entertainment industry this year, he has worked with the likes of Lulu, Alvin Stardust and The Beach Boys, to name a few.
Barry and Dee are now looking ahead to the future and are preparing to announce a big project next week (week commencing 24 February).
